From OFW to Mulberry Farmer: One Man’s Sustainable Return Home
Richard Lamug’s journey from overseas labor to organic farming inspires Filipinos to build a life rooted in purpose.

Sowing Hope: An OFW’s Journey Back to the Land
April 6 – Ilocos Norte. For Richard Eugenio “Richie” Lamug, the journey back home wasn’t just about going back—it was about planting something new. After years of working abroad, Richie returned to the Philippines not just with savings, but with a vision: to build a sustainable, meaningful life through farming. Today, in the humble fields of Pasiocan, Dingras, his mulberry farm stands as a growing legacy of faith, courage, and a deeper love for home.

The OFW Journey That Came Full Circle
Like millions of Filipinos, Richie once left his family to work overseas, driven by the dream of a better life. But instead of waiting for retirement to come back, he came home with purpose. Now, he’s channeling the discipline, resilience, and global perspective he gained abroad into his new life as a farmer. His decision wasn’t easy, but it was clear: “Kaya nating umunlad sa sariling bayan.”
Rooted in Sustainability, Growing with Passion
Richie chose to farm mulberry—a plant known for its nutritional value and silk-producing potential—on a piece of land in his home province. His methods? Environmentally friendly, community-driven, and future-focused. “Hindi lang ito negosyo, ito ay pagmamalasakit sa kalikasan at kinabukasan,” he shares. His sustainable approach ensures that every harvest respects the land and uplifts the people around him.
From Survivor to Sower: A New Definition of Success
Richie’s story reminds us that success is not just about earning abroad—it’s also about coming home stronger, wiser, and ready to contribute. His mulberry farm isn’t just a livelihood; it’s proof that OFWs can thrive in the Philippines with the right mindset, skillset, and heartset.
